Much to the
chagrin of his ardent supporters, Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima – commonly known
as Ronaldo – announced retirement earlier this year. After making a brief
appearance at a friendly match between Brazil and Romania on June 7,
the Brazilian footballer’s record-breaking career streak came to an emotional end.
Besides being one of two men (the other being Zinedine Zidane) to win the FIFA Player of the Year award three times, he became the highest goal scorer
in the history of the World Cup with his fifteenth goal during the FIFA World
Cup in 2006.
In
recognition of his contribution to football, Nike presented the 34-year-old
maverick with a pair of Golden Mercurial.
