How much is that doggy in the window, you say? For a Chinese
businessman, 10 million yuan, apparently. Tibetan mastiffs have emerged as the
latest status symbol for the Chinese, judging from the price a Chinese breeder
was reported to have received for a top-grade red puppy.
The million-pound
puppy, aptly named Big Splash or “Hong Dong” in
Mandarin, is 11 months old and weighs a hefty 82kg. Tibetan mastiffs are an
ancient breed of guard dog, and have been bestowed mythical status by legendary
tales of having being owned by both Genghis Khan and the Lord Buddha.
