The necklace is the oldest and most versatile type of jewellery known to mankind. It can be as simple as a seashell threaded on a length of string, or an elaborate creation using precious metals and gemstones. People have been wearing necklaces since the Stone Age, and countless variations have been developed all over the world since then, yet today’s jewellery makers are still able to produce exciting new designs.
With so many different necklaces on the market choosing one can be a difficult task. Narrow down your options before you go shopping by deciding if you want a necklace for everyday wear or a special occasion, if it needs to match a particular outfit, the wearer’s personality, and your preferred price range.
Necklace lengths
The length of a necklace is very important. Just a few inches can make all the difference between a perfect necklace and one that doesn’t look quite right. The shortest necklaces, usually known as chokers, best suit people with slim necks. A choker designed for evening wear can look stunning with a low cut or strapless dress, and for day wear a choker looks neat when worn with a scoop neck top or inside an open shirt collar. To ensure a comfortable fit, measure your neck and add an inch. Adjustable chokers that can be fastened at several different lengths are the best choice if you’re buying for someone else.
Medium length necklaces, between 17 and 24 inches long, suit most people and can be worn inside low necklines or on top of higher necklines.
Long necklaces are a good choice for anyone wanting to draw attention away from a short neck or double chin. Long, plain chains or ropes of beads can also be twisted and worn as two or even three strands to give several different looks.
Necklace chains
Metal chains are a popular choice for necklaces because they come in so many styles. A fine silver chain can be used to hold a delicate pendant: a chunky gold chain looks great on its own. Chains are made from individual links fitted together. Some, such as a box chain or cable chain, use identical square or round links to form a simple design. Others use combinations of different links to create interesting patterns, as in Byzantine or Figaro chains.
Necklace clasps
Although they are not the most obvious feature of a necklace, you should always examine necklace clasps carefully. A good clasp supports the weight of a necklace, keeps it securely in place, yet is also easy to fasten and undo.
Spring rings and lobster claw clasps are fixed to one end of a necklace and hook through a metal loop on the other end. They are simple to operate but should be checked regularly for signs of wear or damage. A barrel clasp consists of two parts, one on each end of the necklace, which either screw together or are fastened by pushing one part inside the other. Some also have a safety catch fitted for extra security.
If you know what style of necklace you want, or are still a long way from making up your mind, take advice from a professional jeweller experienced in making and selling all types of necklaces. If you can’t find one that’s exactly right, the best solution might be to have one made especially for you!
